snøhetta sought to create a visual association to the dynamics of the car industry with the snaking black steel shell. the curved form of the exterior also intends to connect the massive building with the landscape. on the elevational treatment, the black steel rises to reveal the entrances and bring an abundance of natural light into the indoor spaces thanks to large expanses of glass.
once inside, the interiors are dominated by a light and clean color palette, which perfectly reflects the innovation behind the polestar brand. in the center of the building, there is a glazed atrium that visually ties the different spaces together and serves as a shared courtyard with the aim of connecting all the employees under one roof.
throughout the design, snøhetta brings employees together and stimulates interaction, collaboration, and the exchange of knowledge and experience. this is achieved by shared open workspaces, meeting spaces both inside and outside the building, and a common front garden where workers to take a break and chat together.
the building also serves as a visitor center where curious guests can experience polestar’s ‘visitor loop’, walking along the mezzanine where they can get a view of the whole factory, the different departments, and ongoing exhibitions. there’s also a customer test track, designed by snøhetta in collaboration with engineers from volvo, where potential customers can experience the full capabilities of the electric vehicles.
true to snøhetta’s environmental aspirations, the design features energy-efficient solutions to ventilation, drainage, and use of water. most of polestar’s employees are also transported to the suburban factory by buses from pick-up points from around the city, meaning less commuter pollution from cars.
