President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address to the country on Sunday night was to say government has been in talks about talks about vaccine passports. There’s a bigger picture at play around this, writes Siya Khumalo.

Democratic centralism often plays out as an oxymoron. Found in the ANC’s DNA, it’s a Leninist policy for ensuring party “unity”. One of its consequences is that even when the Constitution isn’t being explicitly violated, its freedoms are still chained to the party’s unity.

This means even if you’re not an ANC supporter, your civil freedom of movement, to own property or engage in the trade of your choice enjoyed, not to the extent that you don’t compromise other people’s rights, but to the extent that the ANC’s centrist control of the state (read: patronage system) isn’t exposed.  That motive is hidden under those reasonable limitations when, for example, corruption is passed off as radical economic transformation.
