JOHOR BARU: A 43-year-old Singaporean factory director has been slapped with a RM10,000 fine and two weeks’ jail sentence at the Sessions Court here after he admitted to bribing an Immigration officer.
Yong Boon Tao pleaded guilty to an alternative charge under Section 214 of the Penal Code after charges were read in Mandarin by a court translator before judge Kamarudin Kamsun on Wednesday (Oct 28).
According to the charge sheets, Yong had given a RM100 bribe to an Immigration officer at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar at about 9.40am on Saturday (Oct 24).
It added that he did so in an attempt to avoid having actions taken against him for breaking the Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) regulations, where he could be given a ‘Not To Land’ (NTL) notice barring him from entering the country.
He was represented by lawyer Hazza Khalid while the case was prosecuted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecutor Mahirah Mohd Pauzi.
Yong paid the fines.
It was earlier reported that a Singaporean man was remanded for five days for allegedly bribing a Malaysian Immigration enforcement officer to allow him to enter Malaysia via the RGL without going through a 14 days quarantine.
