Serbia’s construction industry under pressure from supply chain disruptions

BELGRADE (Serbia), April 14 (SeeNews) – Serbia’s construction industry faces serious problems due to disruptions in construction materials supply chain caused by the war in Ukraine, the secretary of the construction industry association, Ivana Vuletic, said.

In the last ten days, the price of steel fittings in Serbia soared by about 50%, Vuletic said in a video file posted on the website of public broadcaster RTS on Wednesday.

“Currently, the prices of fittings range from 1,100 euro ($1,200) to 1,200 euro per tonne,” she added. “Such inflation leads to supply disruptions for producers, importers and distributors and the market has come to a standstill.”

Last year, a building block cost 19 dinars ($0.18/0.16 euro) on the wholesale market, now it is 33 dinars, and the price of a tonne of iron has risen from 550 euro to 1,100 euro, Vuletic went on to say.

The sanctions imposed on Russia for its military invasion in Ukraine has rattled steel markets in Europe, after Russian steel and energy producers were cut off from global payment systems.
