Grow your legal expertise in a collegiate environment that puts communities first.

At the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, we put local people and businesses at the heart of everything we do, working in partnership with them to provide quality services that are responsive, effective and efficient. Committed to acting with openness, honesty, compassion and humility, we aim to listen and understand in a way that is respectful, encourages involvement and meets the needs of all our communities. Our Legal Service is shared with Westminster City Council and delivers real value for residents and business in both boroughs.

The Role:

As part of our Bi-borough Legal Service, you will be joining a busy team with a varied stream of contracts and procurement work.

The postholder will help the Councils to deliver its priorities to the communities it serves. You will provide advice on complex legal and procedural matters concerning commercial contracts and procurement law as well as public and local government law.  You will also advise on subsidy control and governance matters arising from various commercial transactions. You will support the management and mitigation of risk, protecting the Council’s interests and protecting the communities it serves. Your caseload will include high profile, politically sensitive and financially weighted cases, and you’ll also be expected to attend meetings with government departments, other local authorities, departments of the councils and a range of external stakeholders.

This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside collaborative colleagues who will support your ongoing professional growth and development and to take the legal lead on significant commercial projects and procurements. Dynamic and high performing, our legal team works in an agile way to share and develop in-house expertise.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

About You:

An experienced solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive, you will bring a broad understanding of local government law and significant experience and expertise in public procurement and contract law. A confident communicator, you will be able to challenge, influence and negotiate at the highest levels. You will be politically aware and have the ability to take a strategic view on client priorities. You will be capable of working both independently and as part of a team and respond well to pressure. A commercial mind-set is essential for you to be successful in this role. Compliant with internal procedures and processes and committed to ensuring that work is completed correctly and is of the highest quality, you’ll be flexible, agile and solution focused, and capable of working in a fully virtual and digital environment.

Join us, and you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.
