September 21 (Renewables Now) – Texas-based SEG Solar Inc on Tuesday tabled plans to build an over-2-GW photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing facility in its home state, aiming to commission it by the middle of 2023.
The plant will be located in Houston, with its construction scheduled to begin at the end of this year. The site will be equipped with three production lines that will make N-type Topcon PV modules with 182mm or 210mm solar cells. Components and other materials required for the manufacturing process will be sourced locally.
The new project aligns with SEG’s long-term strategy to enhance its operations in the US, giving it greater control over the supply chain and logistics. The company expects that the products coming out of the Houston plant will qualify for local content incentives, including under the Inflation Reduction Act.
The plant is expected to create as many as 500 new jobs.
To date, SEG has supplied equipment for more than 1.2 GW of utility, commercial and residential solar projects in the US. The company’s goal is to ship more than 2GW of PV modules annually by end-2023.
