Samsung could potentially bring 10,000 jobs to the Austin area.
Ricardo B. Brazziell, MBR / TNSState incentive records show that Samsung is planning a major expansion to its upcoming superconductor factory in Taylor, east of Austin, thus drastically increasing the original $17 billion investment. Once complete, the superconductor factory could bring over 9,000 jobs to the Central Texas area.
Samsung now plans on investing $184.6 billion into expanding its chipmaking factory across plans 10 semiconductor plants, or “fabs,” according to Chapter 313 filings with the state. Chapter 313 is a Texas incentive program that offers a property tax break from school districts in exchange for a project that brings jobs to the area and turning it into tech manufacturing hub.
The filings, posted Wednesday, July 20, say each fab expansion has the potential to bring 9,900 jobs to the Austin and Taylor area.
“I am excited about Samsung’s potential expansion in the region that could exceed $184 billion in Williamson County,” said Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell in a statement.
These Chapter 313 agreements for the 10 fabs have been filed with Taylor ISD, asking for $80 million tax break.
The new investment total is a $167.6 billion increase from the original plans announced in November 2021. An informed source said that an 11th fab is also planned which would increase the total investment to $192 billion and adding the potential for 100 more jobs, bringing the total planned jobs to 10,000.
“We currently do not have specific plans to build at this time, however, the Chapter 313 applications to the State of Texas are part of a long-term planning process of Samsung to evaluate the viability of potentially building additional fabrication plants in the United States,” Samsung said in a statement Wednesday.
