Following a two-year lull, the scrubber market is rebounding, says Nick Confuorto, senior advisor to and former president and COO of exhaust gas cleaning systems manufacturer CR Ocean Engineering (CROE).
In a conversation with Riviera Maritime Media’s executive editor and head of business relations Edwin Lampert, Mr Confuorto notes that Covid, global financial difficulties and fuel pricing all worked together to depress the scrubber market.
“Now, it has improved,” says Mr Confuorto. “Things are looking much better. We are getting many more inquiries and we won some additional projects, so things are starting to look up again. The market is coming back.”
Mr Confuorto took part in a panel discussion, ‘Lessons learned from using scrubbers,’ at Maritime Air Pollution and Fuel Technologies Americas 2022 in Houston in April. In the follow-up video interview, he covers points including conversions of open-loop systems to closed-loop systems, a growing interest in dry scrubbing technology, and his discussions with shipowners around what more scrubbers can do to mitigate CO2 and particulate emissions.
