Residents bank on music to lift morale at this colony | Jaipur News

Jaipur: A man breaks into an old Hindi film song from his balcony. Soon, others in the locality join from their respective balconies, many even using microphones and amplifiers. The area echoes with music, sounds of cheering and applause.
Even as the world grapples with a grave health emergency and as the country goes into lockdown mode, this locality in Jaipur has made peace with their time being spent in the confines of their homes. Singing and music have come as their respite in times of paranoia, shortage of groceries and everyday items, and helps them cope with the crisis well.
TOI on Sunday visited Shyam Nagar, a posh locality in Jaipur which has more than 800 houses, and found that the people there instead of complaining, have rather well adjusted to the lockdown period.
The residents are getting groceries, dairy products and vegetables in a planned manner through wholesalers, who are selling these to them at subsidized rates. In the evenings, the residents of the locality gather in their respective balconies, lawns and terraces and start singing to kill time.
Kishor Saraogi a businessmen living in the locality is a known singer within his locality. Some of the residents over phone urged him to organize something for them, while still following the social distance norms.
“I have been singing since my school and college days and have been brought up in an era where we had singers like Mukeshji, Kishoreda and Rafi saab. So, last evening, all of us sang together. In these times when people are being inundated with negative messages on social networking sites and everyone is scared of Covid-19, my singing will hopefully work as an anti-depressant,” Saraogi said.
Like him, Kavi Sharma, another resident of the colony and an automobile dealer, plays the guitar and sings. “This lockdown is inevitable. Thus, rather than complaining we should make certain adjustments in life,” Kavi said.
What is more satisfying and relieving for the people here is the fact that they are getting dairy products, bakery items like breads, vegetables, fruits and milk at a reasonable price. “Our resident welfare association tied up with a wholesale vegetable seller of Mohana Mandi, a dairy and a wholesaler of grocery. Every night, we get a list of items to be sold on moving vehicles with their prices. You are supposed to keep the exact amount of money for the items you are willing to purchase. We are taking every safety measure. And the musical nights are helping us big time,” said Raj Bansal, a film distributor, who also resides in the locality.
