The procurement capacity of Bid Window 6 projects will be doubled.
The bid submission deadline for the latest procurement round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPPP) has been extended to mid-September.
In a notice published on the IPP Office’s website, it said the extension was to account for the doubling of procurement from 2 600MW to 5 200MW of renewable energy capacity in Bid Window 6 of the REIPPPP. This was among a range of interventions announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week to increase generation capacity to respond to the energy crisis.
“In order to ensure compliance with national procurement prescripts, the new bid submission date for REIPPPP BW6 (Bid Window 6) will be 22 September 2022,” the notice read.
Bid Window 6 was launched in April, and the original deadline was 11 August. At a briefing on Monday, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe mentioned that Bid Window 6 would be extended by between 45 days and 60 days.
Mantashe will also issue a determination for the remaining allocations of renewable energy and storage – 14 771 MW – outlined in the Integrated Resources Plan of 2019.
Other measures to increase generation capacity include doing away with the 100MW cap for independent power producers to be exempt from requiring a licence. Government also wants to incentivise businesses and households to install rooftop solar PV and sell power to Eskom through a feed-in tariff.
