President Cyril Ramaphosa has set up an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the alleged rampant corruption and fraud linked to the procurement of Covid-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) tenders.
In a letter addressed to all ministers dated August 5, Ramaphosa said that following the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, he had appointed six ministers to form a committee that “will deal with the corruption of all procurement including PPE sourced for the purposes of containing and responding to Covid-19”.
Headed by Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola, the committee also includes Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, Police Minister Bheki Cele, Public Service Administration Minister Senzo Mchunu and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
Ramaphosa also called for the full “cooperation of all [the other] ministers in providing all information related to names of companies and amounts of tenders that’s have been awarded” in their departments.
“These lists must be provided to the above committee as a matter of urgency this week,” said the president, adding that the committee would compile a report to be shared with the general public.
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule and former minister Nomvula Mokonyane’s children have also been implicated in Covid-19 tender fraud.
The lists are to be submitted directly to Lamola’s chief of staff.
This drastic measure comes after the ANC came under scrutiny in the past few weeks after the governing party’s members were accused of allegedly looting Covid-19 funds and being linked to PPE tender fraud.
Among those implicated are presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko’s husband, Madzikane Thandisizwe Diko, Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku and his wife Loyiso Masuku, a member of the mayoral committee in the city of Johannesburg.
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule and former minister Nomvula Mokonyane’s children have also been implicated in Covid-19 tender fraud.
