May 26 (Renewables Now) – Solar products manufacturer Qcells today gave more details about its planned capacity expansion in the US, saying that its new 1.4-GW solar photovoltaic (PV) panel factory will be built near the existing one in Dalton, Georgia.
The company, which is owned by South Korea’s Hanwha Solutions Corp (KRX:009830), plans to invest USD 171 million (EUR 160m) in the project. The new facility will increase Qcells’ total production capacity in the US to 3.1 GW. According to the firm, this equals one-third of the country’s solar module manufacturing capacity.
Qcells expects to break ground on the project in the autumn of 2022 and have the plant up and running in the first half of 2023. About 470 new workers are to be hired in Whitfield County.
The investment reflects the company’s plan to rebuild the US solar supply chain. Its Korean parent also recently became the largest shareholder of polysilicon manufacturer REC Silicon.
