Nestlé Purina PetCare announced a $550 million investment to build a new pet food factory in southwest Ohio.
The new location in Williamsburg Township, about 30 miles east of Cincinnati, will be Purina’s 22nd manufacturing facility and its first new factory built from the ground up since 1975. Last month, the company released plans to convert a former brewery into a new pet food factory in Eden, North Carolina.
Preliminary plans call for the 1.2 million-square-foot facility to produce dry dog and cat food brands including Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE and Dog Chow. The company expects to employ more than 300 people at the new site by 2024.
Construction will begin this fall, and the factory is expected to be operational in 2023.
The company said the new plant will be designed with sustainability at the forefront, including a commitment to send zero waste for disposal, and production processes designed to recover and reuse heat and water. Purina also is striving to make the facility 100% powered by renewable electricity in the shortest practical time frame, while supporting the company’s ambition for zero environmental impact in company operations by 2030.
