Lucknow: The purchase of wheat in Uttar Pradesh will go on up to June 30 this year. The wheat procurement centres run by the department of food and civil supplies will be operational till the end of this month. The government has been compelled to extend the date of direct wheat buying from farmers by another 15 days since the department is nowhere in sight of meeting the target.
The state government had made a plan to procure 60 lakh metric tonnes of wheat this Rabi season. However, so far not even 4 lakh metric tonnes has been procured. Senior officials from the department said that due to low yield and better prices in the international market, the farmers preferred to sell their stock to private middlemen and merchants.
Though the minimum support price for 100 kg of wheat crop was increased to Rs 2015, the farmers did not come forward in large numbers to sell their stock.
