Prep continues for ‘Day on the Beach’ – Santa Cruz Sentinel

Bill Daley and John Simon join an army of volunteers, including many union carpenters, as they assemble wooden pallets Friday at Depot Park in Santa Cruz. The pallets will create a 5,700-square-foot platform on the Cowell Beach sand on Saturday enabling those with mobility issues to travel over it with ease as Shared Adventures hosts its annual Day on the Beach. Founded in 1994 by Foster Andersen, a survivor of a spinal cord injury with quadriplegia, Shared Adventures has provided hundreds of life-enriching recreational and social activities for people with special needs. Day on the Beach is the highlight of the Shared Adventures calendar. More than 300 people with special needs, more than 400 family members and friends, and more than 250 volunteers team up to share a full day of adaptive sports including kayaking, outrigger canoeing, SCUBA diving, and beach wheelchair rides.
