Port of Immingham plots £100m expansion

Plans are being readied for the construction of a new £100m freight terminal at the port of Immingham in Humber, Lincolnshire.

The Association of British Ports (ABP) signed a deal with Swedish ferry company Stena Line to jointly develop the new terminal, which it described as “a significant infrastructure development for the region”. ABP said it would apply for a development consent order from the transport secretary in early summer.

The port at Immingham is said to be largest port in the UK by tonnage.

The proposed facility will relocate the current freight operations to a new space alongside the Immingham Outer Harbour. The expansion would support the increased freight demand across the region as well as the rest of the UK. According to ABP, the North Sea routes have seen demand for freight to and from the EU increase since Brexit. It expected this trend to continue.

Stena Line chief executive officer Niclas Martensson said: “Our freight levels are at record levels and are continuing to increase, so we want to build on this success and provide additional services to our most important business needs, those of our customers, with the development of a brand new terminal and berths at the port of Immingham.”

In 2021, Winvic won a £108m job to deliver a new rail freight exchange in Northamptonshire. In 2019, John Sisk & Son was awarded a contract to build a new terminal at the Isle of Man ferry terminal in Liverpool, a project that has since seen a rise in cost and delays.
