Playhouse Square’s Broadway in Akron series includes ‘Waitress,’ ‘Anastasia,’ ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ ‘Hairspray’

AKRON, Ohio – Playhouse Square’s Broadway in Akron series will feature performances of “Waitress,” “Anastasia,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” and “Hairspray” at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.

“After an unthinkably long intermission, it feels great to bring Broadway’s best back to our amazing Akron audiences,” David Greene, senior vice president of programming at Playhouse Square, said in a news release.

Season tickets are available beginning Wednesday, July 7 for renewal for existing season ticket holders. Information about how to renew will arrive via mail, or season ticket holders can call Playhouse Square weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 216-241-6000. Season tickets will go on sale to the general public July 28 and range in price ($40-$295 each), with payment plans available.

The show lineup includes:

“Waitress” (Oct. 8-9): An Akron premiere, “Waitress” is based on the iconic film and tells the story of Jenna, a pie maker who dreams of leaving her small town to pursue her dreams. The performance is a celebration of friendship and motherhood.

“Anastasia” (Nov. 30-Dec. 1): This uplifting musical will take viewers on a journey from the Russian Empire to Paris in the 1920s as a courageous young woman embarks on a journey to discover her past.

“Hairspray” (April 12-13, 2022): Broadway’s Tony Award-winning musical comedy, “Hairspray” tells the tale of 16-year-old dancer Tracy Turnblad in 1960s Baltimore as she tries to achieve her dream of dancing on TV.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (May 10-11, 2022): Roald Dahl’s original tale chronicles the experiences of a young boy whose luck suddenly changes when he finds a golden ticket inside his chocolate bar. The performance includes songs from the original movie such as “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.”
