Plans for former Palmer & Harvey site approved

Plans for the redevelopment of the former Palmer & Harvey site in Leeds have been given the go-ahead.

VCEP, supported by Farrar Bamforth Associates, submitted plans to Leeds City Council earlier this year for the site off Gelderd Road.

The site was originally occupied by drinks wholesaler Winerite before being purchased by Palmer & Harvey in 1998. The grocery wholesaler ceased trading in 2017.

The plans cover the partial demolition of some existing buildings, subdivision of the remaining units, new build extensions, re-cladding, and formation of service yards.

A series of units ranging in size from about 2,400 sq ft to 15,600 sq ft would be created for private sale or lease.

The gross internal floorspace would reduce from 93,300 sq ft to 47,400 sq ft.

The council has now granted planning permission for the works, subject to conditions, under delegated powers.

A planning officer’s report accompanying the decision said: “It is seen that the re-development will make the overall site much more commercially attractive to a range of smaller/medium sized businesses due to the flexibility of space and units in combination alongside the allowance of having a greater range of employment uses available to the market rather than just class B8.

“This will assist in wider employment and spin off businesses in the area. The attractiveness of such a large site and collection of old redundant buildings to one business is considered much less marketable and deliverable.”
