Two individuals have been arrested after Stephens County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) responded to an assistance request from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) at a home in the area where lawmen found more than just guns obtained illegally.
Court records show Quianna Lorraine Varner, 23, of Duncan, faces a charge of child neglect. Kevin Michael Brisco, 20, of Duncan, faces charges of child neglect and unlawful possession of a controlled drug with intent to distribute.
Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney said the case unfolded early Wednesday, Jan. 29 after the assistance call from ATF. The assistance call, according to McKinney, stemmed from the illegal purchase of firearms in the county.
“The main thing was to go over, get the weapons purchased illegally by her,” McKinney said. “They go over, seize the weapons, and while they are in the house, they notice bullet holes in the wall, they notice other things.”
Reports show Brisco had a loaded 45CAL handgun in his pocket when lawmen arrived.
At that time, McKinney said Varner and Brisco were detained. The two were not under arrest, but were interviewed.
“In that interview we developed information that Xanax was being sold out of the house, where those weapons were and we knew there was a 5-year-old child in the house when the weapons were fired in the house and when the drugs were being distributed,” McKinney said.
From there, a search warrant was prepared and executed through the help of the District Attorney’s Drug Task Force.
Affidavits from the scene show over 300 Xanax bars — different from just normal “pills” because of a heavier dosage amount — were found inside the master bedroom with a loaded and chambered Century Arms 7.62MM. McKinney said this style of weapon is more commonly known as an AK-47.
McKinney also said his deputies found “thousands of dollars in cash” in the residence.
A bullet hole was found in the front door, which law enforcement determined was fired from inside the residence, but another bullet hole was found in the bathroom shower. Reports show on the other side of the bathroom wall was the child’s room and the head of the child’s bed “was just inches from the bullet hole.”
The main living room of the home also contained a backpack with a bag containing more Xanax bars. All items, including the Xanax and the firearms, were “within reach of the child,” affidavits state.
Reports show Varner told deputies during an interview two separate occasions within the last week resulted in firearms going off inside the residence with the child home. The front door was shot by Brisco, Varner said in the interview, and the bathroom was “accidentally shot” by a friend of Brisco’s, reports state.
During an interview, Brisco allegedly admitted to selling the Xanax bars to friends for $5 a piece. The same affidavit shows Brisco told deputies the friends come over multiple times a week to smoke and buy the Xanax.
Department of Human Services has been notified and the child has been removed from the home.
Both Brisco and and Varner each have a bond set at $200,000 and reside in the Stephens County Jail. They will both appear in court for a preliminary hearing conference at 9 a.m. March 18.
McKinney said charges of obtaining firearms illegally will still be handled federally under ATF.
