No More Empty Pots receives brand new refrigerated truck

A brand new, colorful refrigerated truck is hitting the road to fight food insecurity.Founder and president Nancy Williams said in the height of the pandemic, No More Empty Pots distributed 2,800 more meals each week than before the pandemic. “Those numbers are creeping up again, because it’s harder for people to make ends meet,” Williams said.Healthy Blue donated the new wheels and $25,000 to No More Empty Pots’ operations. Dr. Rob Rhodes is the president of Healthy Blue. “It really correlates with our motto which is ‘food is medicine,'” Rhodes said. The truck can store more than two pallets of food. No More Empty Pots has cut down its deliveries from two days a week to only one day a week.”It is much easier to navigate the narrow streets that we have in north and south Omaha, and it also helps with fuel efficiency,” Williams said.The truck will travel to 37 counties in Iowa and Nebraska.”Having this vehicle, we can get food to people who may not have the transportation that they need,” Williams said.Rhodes said, as a physician, he is happy to see No More Empty Pots distribute more heart-healthy meals to the community.”I think this is where they’re helping us with our goal of providing healthy food choices to some of our most vulnerable patients,” Rhodes said.
