Wanaparthy: Minister for Agriculture S Niranjan Reddy on Wednesday disclosed that the State government has requested the Centre not to limit procurement of red gram from Telangana to just 46,000 metric tonne, but to be flexible enough to allow procurement of another 50,000 metric tonne of red gram from the State.
He said the request followed increase in yield this year as a result of delivery of irrigation projects in the State.
Speaking after inaugurating red gram procurement centre at Wanaparthy market yard, he said that Centre had set Minimum Support Price (MSP) of red gram at Rs 5,800 and due to the cap on the quantity of red gram procurement from the State, farmers are worried about the produce.
Niranjan Reddy said that currently, procurement was being done through Markfed and that it would be great if the Centre immediately took the decision to increase the limit to 50,000 metric tonne.
Cautioning that some traders from other States could find their way into the markets of erstwhile Mahabubnagar district, he asked the officials to prevent any such attempt which could put red gram procurement from farmers in Telangana State at stake. He also urged the farmers of the region not to encourage any middlemen coming to them from neighbouring States to sell red gram produce.
He also said that as a result of extending irrigation to farmers across Mahabubnagar district, yield of paddy, red gram and groundnut had increased.
ZP Chairperson R Loknath Reddy, District Libraries’ Chairman B Lakshmaiah, Sheep Rearers Cooperative Societies President Kurumurthy Yadav and others were present at the event.
