[News Brief] Fire hits chemical factory in Yeosu

A fire that started at a chemical factory in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, around 10 a.m. on Wednesday was contained in some three hours, after burning down several buildings and storage spaces in the area.

Around 30 people were evacuated and no casualties had been reported of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The fire which started at a lubricant storage warehouse at the factory spread quickly to nearby furniture stores, the fire authorities said. Black fumes covered the sky as 20,000 liters of lubricant oil stored in the factory caught fire. Parts the mountainous area surrounding the complex of prefab buildings were also burned.

Two fire helicopters, 46 fire engines and around 120 fire fighters were mobilized to fight the blaze.

The local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
