CHICO, Calif. – With all 177 shelters built, the homeless staying at places like Comanche Creek are anxious for opening day.
“It is definitely a blessing for the community to be looking out for us like that,” said Ike Johnson, a man living at Comanche Creek. “So, I am excited about it.”
Workers were prepping the area for the office building Friday morning.
It will have four offices, a kitchen and two bathrooms.
“That will kind of act as the intake portion of the facility too so we are prepping that now and hoping to have the office trailer delivered and installed next week,” said the public works director for the City of Chico Erik Gustafson.
Crews also worked on restoring water access to the site.
“Potable water and re-establishing the connection to the brick-and-mortar restrooms that are currently on-site,” said Gustafson. “Working on prepping pads for the drinking fountain and water faucets and spigots.”
Gustafson is happy with the progress but says more work needs to be done.
“Our objective is to really have the site be open by end of February and March one and once those administrative functions as far as the site rules and outreach and engagement processes are established and agreements are made, then we will be able to open,” said Gustafson.
Action News Now did reach out to the Jesus Center who said it is still working out all the details of what the rules will be on site.
