It has been a week since the doors opened on the new 60,000 square foot Food Bank distribution center near the Lincoln Airport. President and CEO Michaella Kumke tells KLIN News the move went smoothly and they are now in the settling in phase.
“Just finding what is the new rhythm for us. How do we best use the space that we planned for and making adjustments because nothing is perfect, ” Kumke says. “But it is fantastic to be operating out of this facility.”
She says the new space gives them more room to store food and get food in and out very quickly. Last Friday Kumke says they were able to hold their first on site food distribution. They served nearly 700 households.
She says says they continue to see a ripple effect caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The numbers remain steady to high and at this point we are doing what we can to get food out to those neighbors. We’re seeing record numbers at distributions and specialty distributions like our Lincoln fresh truck where folks are coming for fresh produce,” Kumke says.
The Food Bank of Lincoln serves more than 57,000 neighbors facing hunger and food insecurity in Lincoln and several counties southeast Nebraska.
