Ahmedabad: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Sunday unearthed a psychotropic substance manufacturing factory at the Vapi GIDC in Vapi town of Valsad district and seized 68kg of drugs having a total value of at least Rs 1 crore in the illicit market.
According to the NCB officers, four men including a chemist from Telangana, were caught in the case.
“Based upon specific information, further developed by NCB Ahmedabad zonal team, a factory involved in manufacture of psychotropic substances was identified and busted at Vapi Gujarat,” said an NCB officer The factory was being used for manufacturing of psychotropic substances mainly suspected to be alprazolam and nordazepam without any licence for illicit sale, added the officer. “The team was keeping surveillance for around a week. Till now, four persons have been apprehended and the factory premises has been seized along with chemicals used for manufacturing,” said the officer, adding that the further investigation is underway.
Sources in the NCB said that the chemist from Telangana was the key accused in the case. “He ran the manufacturing lab along with two men from West Bengal and one from Maharastra,” said an NCB officer.
The officer said that the accused were running the factory for around one-and-a-half-month. “The accused used to procure the raw materials through local units. This is worrisome as they could procure and manufacture the psychotropic drugs with ease and agencies may not get the inkling of the illicit method,” said a source in the central agency.
Another NCB officer privy to development said that the accused had around a week ago made a sample of around 25 to 50 grams which they delivered to drug mafia.
After preparing the sample, they finally manufactured the drugs in huge quantity of 68kg which they were supposed to deliver in Maharashtra and Telangana, said the officer.
The NCB officer said that the commercial quantity of such psychotropic drugs through licence is between 20 and 50 grams. As they manufactured such a huge quantity, they are liable for a sentence between 10 and 20 years of imprisonment along with the fine according to the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance) act.
In August last year also, the NCB had busted a mephedrone manufacturing factory in the Vapi GIDC.
