Nationwide school textbook distribution begins

Students receive free textbooks from government in at least eight districts of Rangpur division on January 1, 2020 Dhaka Tribune

Distribution of free textbooks first started in 2010 at primary, secondary levels

The government has begun distributing around 353,144,554 free textbooks to more than 42 million primary and secondary level students across Bangladesh for the academic year 2020.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni formally addressed a special ceremony of the countrywide program “National Textbook Festival” at Adhar Chandra Government High School in Dhaka’s Savar on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, another program is also taking place at the central playground on Dhaka University premises in the city marking the occasion.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated free textbook distribution program for the academic year 2020 as the “National Textbook Festival” is set to be celebrated across the country.

She formally opened the free textbook distribution program by handing over books of primary and secondary levels to students at a function at her official Ganabhaban residence, reports BSS.

Earlier, Dr Dipu Moni handed over a set of textbooks for the JSC and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) to the premier while State Minister for Primary and Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossen handed over another set of textbooks of Primary Education Completion (PEC) and Ebtedayee.

The government printed the textbooks by maintaining proper standard for pre-primary, primary, secondary, ebtedayee and SSC level students, so that all students get textbooks for free on the first day of the New Year, Education Ministry sources said.

“This (festival) is the outcome of our (government’s) sincere commitment to reach the books on the first day of the year,” a top official of the Education Ministry said.

He said Bangladesh has set a rare example in the world through distribution of free textbooks among large number of students on the first day of January.

Distribution of free textbook started since 2010 at both primary and secondary levels in the country.
