Most work accidents involving construction sites, kitchens, logistics areas and casinos

The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) has indicated that most work-related accidents involving its occupational safety and health agreement signatories occurred mainly in construction sites, kitchens, logistics areas and casinos.

‘Companies, where most work-related accidents took place, indicated to DSAL that depending on the causes of the accidents, improvement measures were applied in the places where the most accidents occurred, with an increase in the number of inspection visits, correcting irregularities in the facilities, in the work environment and work procedures,’ the department noted.

Just in the first quarter of this year, a total of five people have died and 885 were left temporarily incapacitated due to work-related accidents in the first three months of this year, according to data published by the DSAL.

In just three months Macau reported almost as many work-related fatalities as the seven reported last year.

In 2013 the DSAL enforced the agreement as an attempt to raise the level of occupational safety and health of companies, with employers and workers assuming joint responsibility in promoting safety at work.

So far some 200 companies and institutions have joined the agreement, including gaming and hotel operators, public service departments, construction companies, and SMEs.

‘More than 90 per cent of these entities identified areas with danger in the places and risk assessment and also designed contingency measures to reduce the danger,’ the department noted.

More than 1,000 workers from construction, entertainment and gaming companies received also received occupational health and safety training.
