PODGORICA (Montenegro), March 28 (SeeNews) – Montenegro’s Chamber of Commerce expects the country’s supply chain to remain stable despite the war in Ukraine, but pointed to potential problems in flour deliveries.
“Although the inflationary trends caused by the war in Ukraine affect everyone, the supply chain in Montenegro is not endangered. Flour requires special treatment and it is necessary to make an additional effort to ensure a smooth supply,” the Chamber of Commerce said in a statement last week.
The price cap on certain products that the government is considering to introduce should be accompanied by consultations with the trade sector and adequate subsidies to cover the differences between market and capped prices, the Chamber of Commerce said after a meeting of its trade associations board.
“It is necessary to continue adhering to the values of market economy and develop an institutional framework that will contribute to productivity and competitiveness. There was also an assessment that it is not enough to reduce the value added tax on basic groceries, but it is necessary to do the same for other food products, including baby foods,” the trade body said.
Earlier this month, Montenegro’s government asked Serbia to allow the export of certain quantities of vegetable oil, flour and wheat to the country and back Podgorica in securing basic foodstuffs amid disruptions in supply chains caused by the war in Ukraine.
