Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Get a sweet for your Valentine at the Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory

JACKSON, MI – Take a trip back in time and grab your Valentine a treat at the Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory.

The candy store is owned by Brian Surgene and has been open on the east side of the city for roughly six years. The store has something to help Jacksonians satisfy their sweet tooth, while also bringing back nostalgic memories of favorite childhood treats, store manager Claudina Kestner said.

“People come in here to just take a break from life as we know today and to take a step back in time,” she said.

From the distressed floor, brick walls and jars full of old-fashioned candies, walking inside the shop feels like it’s back in the late 1800′s, she said.

Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory prides itself in having something for everyone. Whether they crave chocolate, sour candy or even flavored sodas. The store is great for those looking for quick gifts, whether its for a birthday, a baby shower or Valentine’s Day, Kestner said.

“Some people call us the gift emporium,” she said.

Classic and old-school candy are the biggest sellers at the candy shop, including root beer barrels and butterscotch buttons. Traditional chocolates, such as truffles and turtles, are also popular grabs.

“People want something that’s not found in the big-box stores,” Kestner said.

Along with that, classic, homemade fudge is popular, with 25 different flavors, including sea salt caramel and raspberry cheesecake. Staff also love to give out free samples, so don’t forget to ask, Kestner said.

For those who don’t have a sweet tooth, freshly popped popcorn is also available at the store.

Feeling overwhelmed by all of the options? Kestner said staff are more than happy to help each customer find just what they are looking for. Gift baskets are also available and ready to go for those who are indecisive, she said.

Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory, 522 E. Michigan Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday.

More information can be found on its website and Facebook page.
