Man arrested on suspicion of meth distribution after Greeley traffic stop for expired plates – Greeley Tribune

A 63-year-old man could face a drug felony charge after a traffic stop earlier this month in Greeley.

About 11:55 p.m. Oct. 18, a Greeley police officer stopped Donald Arthur Schell, 63, for expired plates in the 1600 block of 23rd Avenue. Schell admitted to knowing the plates were expired, according to arrest records, and said the vehicle belonged to a friend. He said the vehicle didn’t have insurance or registration, records state. He also said his driver’s license was expired out of Idaho, which the officer confirmed.

The officer wrote a citation, and a tow truck was called for the vehicle. Police conducted an inventory search on the vehicle, finding a small black bag on the floor in front of the driver’s seat. Schell said it was his and filled with personal things. Inside the bag, police found what appeared to be a meth pipe, a small scale and a small bag of about 1 gram of presumptive positive meth, according to arrest records.

Schell then said he did not use narcotics and that the bag was not his, records state. Police then found another bag in a separate compartment of the black bag. The bag contained 30.4 grams of presumptive positive meth, according to police.

Schell was arrested and booked into the Weld County Jail on suspicion of unlawful drug distribution, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with out a license, driving without insurance as the non-owner of the vehicle and expired plates. He has since been released.

The Weld District Attorney’s Office has until 3:30 p.m. Thursday to file formal charges in this case.
