LG CNS Co., unlisted IT service unit under South Korean conglomerate LG Group, has successfully developed a distribution robot suitable for work at logistics centers, readying to challenge global leading logistics distribution robots from the U.S. and China.

LG CNS’s 20 robots were deployed for test of its shifting and distributing capabilities at logistics centers, according to industry sources on Monday.

LG CNS developed picking robots before and then succeeded in developing distribution robots recently, making an inroad into the distribution robot market dominated by Chinese and U.S. makers.

It was in charge of design and system establishment of the autonomous mobile robot and partnered with a domestic company to manufacture it. LG CNS currently commands a 30 percent share in the domestic logistics automation market worth an estimated 810 billion won ($645 million).

The latest development is the result of LG CNS’s technological advancements in artificial intelligence, optimization algorithm and digital twin.

AI-based distribution robots learn the spatial layout and choose the optimal path to move. If two robots meet each other on the same route, one now can choose the original path and the other immediately takes the second route without operation halt.

The new robot is capable of carrying a load of up to 30 kilograms even at cold temperatures like below minus 10 degrees Celsius.

“LG CNS distribution robots can better utilize space and improve the handling amount by applying AI and optimization algorithm. The company will lead establishment of smart, intellectual logistics centers capable of distributing tens of thousands of products by delivery destinations to satisfy the end users,” said Lee Jun-ho, head of smart logistics business at LG CNS.
