HIGH POINT – Legends Furniture will eliminate its ocean freight surcharge on all imported products effective Oct. 15. The company said that although container rates are still much higher than they used to be, they’re significantly less than they were 18 months ago.
“We decided it was time to drop the surcharge even though we’ll need to absorb the difference until we sell through our older inventory”, said Tim Donk, vice president of sales. “Legends is always about putting their customer first in every company decision and this is the right thing to do at the right time.”
As of August, Donk told Furniture Today that the company was still averaging around $10,000 per container.
“Everyone who signed a contract last year is still paying through the roof,” he said. “I don’t think rates will go back to what they were, but they are indeed coming down every week.”
Legends sources from a diverse pool of countries, including Vietnam and Mexico. It also operates a manufacturing and warehousing facility in Arizona. The company sells bedroom, entertainment, office, occasional and upholstered furniture.
Other companies to either drop surcharges or lower prices as a result of falling container rates include New Classic Furniture, Parker House, Coaster, Martin, Legacy Classic|Modern, Porter Designs, Home Meridian and American Woodcrafters.
