KALAMAZOO, MI — A project on Parkview Avenue that was delayed due to supply chain issues is anticipated to being in April, the city of Kalamazoo reports.
The city will hold a virtual meeting from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, to discuss the upcoming reconstruction work.
The work is expected to start in April and will include repaving the road, upgrading water main, new water service lines and pedestrian improvements, the city said in a news release.
The Parkview Avenue project this year will focus on the section from Tamsin Avenue to Oakland Drive. It will include upgraded water main installation, upsizing and road resurfacing.
Additionally, the project will include the construction of a protected mid-block crossing at Barnard Avenue. It will connect to the north side of Parkview Avenue to a newly constructed sidewalk that will direct non-motorists to Broadway Avenue, Public Works Division Manager Anthony Ladd told MLive.
The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a contract with Peters Construction Company in September 2021 for a total cost of $2,986,431.35, Ladd said.
Residents can join the meeting via the Zoom link (https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82535922695) and ask questions using the webinar’s Q&A Chat box. Residents can also call in to listen to the meeting by dialing 269-552-6425 and entering Meeting ID 825 3592 2695.
The meeting will be recorded and posted on the city of Kalamazoo YouTube Channel following the meeting.
City staff will present information on the planned improvements, scope, timeline, phased detouring and other aspects of the reconstruction work and will also be available to answer any questions residents may have about the project, the city said.
Parkview Avenue reconstruction was originally scheduled to be completed in 2021, the city said, but was postponed due to supply chain shortages.
This project is now anticipated to begin in late April 2022 and conclude by the end of our construction season in the fall, however, the contractor’s projected progress schedule has not yet been received, Ladd said.
The project will be completed in two phases that will have an impact on local traffic. The first phase will last 1-2 weeks and will require a full closure to through traffic on Parkview Avenue, between Knox Street and Madison Street.
The second phase, which will take the remaining amount of project construction time, will only allow eastbound traffic through the construction zone.
Signed detour routes and message display boards will be present during the closures.
Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to have access to the sidewalk along Parkview Avenue for much of the construction progression. Planned water shutoffs for water main connections will be scheduled and advanced notice will be given to affected residents and businesses. Boil water advisories and liftings of those advisories will also be communicated as needed.
