JS body for proper distribution of funds to workers

The parliamentary standing committee on labour ministry on Sunday recommended proportionate distribution of the Workers’ Welfare Foundation Fund to the eligible candidates from across the country instead of paying more to workers of some selected districts.

The committee members said that they had received several complaints that workers from some districts were getting incentives and compensations more than that of most other districts.

‘We recommend proper distribution of the fund on the basis of need and population density,’ said Md Mujibul Haque, the standing committee chairman told New Age.

The immediate past labour minister Mujibul also said that there were specific rules and regulations for paying compensations to the workers from the fund.

‘Usually, workers from the non-formal sectors get priority as the workers of formal sectors get compensations from different sectors,’ he said.

The committee also asked the labour ministry to invite the business leaders to pay the government due shares from their profits to the government’s Workers’ Welfare Foundation Fund for helping the destitute workers during their needs.

Mujibul also said that the committee asked the department of labour officials not to harass workers if they approached them for forming trade unions.

‘We made the recommendations as several workers complained that the department officials sometimes decline to register trade unions even after complying with all requirements,’ Mujibul said.

He also said that the committee would invite the ministry of industry officials to discuss the relocation of the factories from the Old Town of Dhaka.

‘We will invite them to attend our meeting as we want to help them for the relocation process,’ he said
