Jake DeBrusk, his trade request and maximizing the time he has left with the Bruins – The Athletic

The relationship between Jake DeBrusk and the Bruins will conclude at some point. DeBrusk wants out. The Bruins prefer to acquire an asset instead of not issuing DeBrusk his $4.41 million qualifying number and seeing him walk for nothing at season’s end.

Until that time, it is in both parties’ best interest for DeBrusk to play well. If he’s engaged, the left wing could draw more bidders into the auction. The Bruins are more dangerous when DeBrusk is soaring behind Brad Marchand and Taylor Hall.

Saturday was a good example of that.

DeBrusk helped set up two of the Bruins’ three goals in their 3-2 win over Winnipeg. That came after a goal-and-assist performance the previous game against Washington. He has played like a keeper, not a player on the trade market.

“I like when Jake’s physical and he’s moving his feet,” said Marchand, a surprise entry to Saturday’s lineup after exiting early against the Capitals. “That’s where he excels, when he uses his speed. He’s such a dynamic player. I think at times, he doesn’t realize what he can create just by skating, moving his feet and getting in on the forecheck. He doesn’t always have to be overly physical. But his speed will create turnovers, opportunities for his teammates and for himself.
