WHEREAS, the United Nations observes March 25th as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which was established in 2007 to raise awareness of the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, its impact on the modern world, and its legacies, including racism and prejudice; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme “Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism,” pays tribute to the millions of human stories of untold suffering, pain and unwavering courage of the families and communities ripped apart and our continued struggle against the enduring legacy of racism; and
WHEREAS, in Nevada, we recognize the systemic impacts of racism on the Black community and proclaimed racism a public health crisis in Nevada in August 2021; and
WHEREAS, in line with organizations such as Clark County Black Caucus and the Black Student Union Network, the State of Nevada remains committed to remembering the injustices of the past, ensuring equality and inclusion for all communities, and making our state more just; and
WHEREAS, the Clark County Black Caucus sponsors the Black Student Union Network, representing 34 CCSD high schools and 4 middle schools and convenes for their annual conference, and this year students will honor their ancestors and learn about their ancient African civilizations and contributions to the world; and
WHEREAS, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is a time to learn about and reflect on our own American history, to pay tribute to the millions of Africans who were torn from their homelands and communities, and to stand up in solidarity against racism everywhere;
