A container terminal in South China’s Hainan Province will be expanded and shipping routes increased by the end of 2024, an official of Hainan Transportation Bureau said at a press conference Monday.
The two projects in Yangpu Port are expected to be launched in September 2022 and completed in 2024, when it will be possible to dock four 200,000-ton and three 150,000-ton container ships at once, said Li Zhiqiang, deputy head of Hainan Transportation Bureau.
The port is anticipated to handle 5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and open 80 trade routes in 2025, and with numbers to jump to 10 million TEUs and 100 routes respectively by 2030.
Next, the port will build four 200,000-ton containers and one 150,000-ton container berth. The designed annual throughput will increase by 5.1 million TEUs, Li said.
Yangpu Port is crucial in connecting China and Southeast Asia. Data from Hainan Daily showed that currently there are 47 shipping berths here, including 32 for vessels exceeding 10,000 tons, with a total shipping capacity of over 100 million tons and superior port facilities. The trade routes connect southeast Asia, Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Bay and other major ports.
