A Hyundai auto parts subsidiary will establish a new manufacturing facility in western Georgia to produce vehicle transmissions, state officials announced.

Hyundai Transys expects to invest $240 million to expand its current operations in West Point, Georgia. Georgia economic development officials said the new plant will make eight-speed transmissions for an unnamed “global automotive leader”; Hyundai Motor Group’s Kia Motors operates a plant in the city, and Hyundai’s Montgomery, Alabama, plant is located 90 miles away.

The 620,000-square-foot project is expected to create 678 full-time jobs, along with 165 related positions in construction, handling, and inspection. Once completed, Hyundai Transys alone is slated to employ more than 1,700 people in the state.

“We are excited for the opportunities ahead as we expand our presence in the West Point community,” Hyundai Transys Georgia Powertrain President Sangkil Jung said in the announcement.

The subsidiary could qualify for state and local tax incentives, but a Georgia Department of Economic Development spokeswoman told the Associated Press that terms have not been finalized.

Kia, which received hundreds of millions of dollars in state incentives to establish its West Point plant more than a decade ago, accounts for more than 4,300 jobs in the county between the automaker, its affiliates, and suppliers, the AP reports.
