Hynix’s Shuttered Eugene Chip Factory Gets New Life as Video Display Plant - Supply Chain Council of European Union

Stratacache plans to start a video display technology pilot line at 1.2-million-square-foot former Hynix computer chip factory it acquired in Eugene. The Dayton, OH-based company expects to begin building products by summer of 2021 as it ramps up production at a mothballed site that includes a large cleanroom and other systems suited for high-tech manufacturing.

The plant on a 200-acre site at 1830 Willow Creek Circle closed 12 years ago amidst a memory chip market downturn. Eventually, Stratacache bought the property at auction in March 2020 for $6.3 million.

Stratacache produces technology for digital signs such as highway billboards, fast-food menu boards, airport ticket kiosks and retail displays for such companies as LG, Nvidia, IBM, Verizon, AT&T, Intel and AMD. The company plans to eventually produce MicroLEDs, the next generation in video display technology, at the Eugene facility.

It expects to invest between $150 million and $350 million to get the facility ready including mechanical upgrades, reroofing and adapting it to accommodate Stratacache’s technology.
