Historic sign shines again at site of former chocolate factory

More than five decades after it went dark, a historic sign will again light up a Boston neighborhood each night.The Walter Baker Factory sign, once a landmark in the Lower mills area of Dorchester, was rescued with the help of a Community Preservation Grant from the city of Boston and support from numerous donors. It was lit for the first time in approximately 55 years at sunset on Friday, atop the former Walter Baker Chocolate Factory Administration building at 1231 Adams St. The building is now Walter Baker Artists’ Lofts.The chocolate business was started before the American Revolution and went down in history as the first factory to produce chocolate in the United States. The factory operated along the Neponset River until 1965. Over time, the business evolved into the Baker’s Chocolate brand currently owned by Kraft Heinz.
