Here’s where to recycle your used Christmas tree

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Some people try to stretch out Christmas cheer well into January. Some are ready to move on as soon as presents are opened.

Whichever category you fall in, there’s plenty of time and opportunity to recycle your used Christmas tree.

Starting Dec. 26, residents of the New Hanover County area can take used trees (sans lights and ornaments, of course) to three locations. New Hanover County’s Environmental Management program is managing the program and plans to turn the material into compost.

“Real Christmas trees and wreaths are biodegradable and we can recycle them into mulch and compost after the holidays are over,” Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman said in a county press release.

It may go without saying, but artificial trees cannot be accepted. Trees must be free from any decorations, stands, or any other non-biodegradable materials before being donated.
