Greenville City Council approves demolition of 129-year-old former factory building destroyed by fire

GREENVILLE — Members of Greenville City Council voted Tuesday evening to approve a recommendation to demolish the dwelling located at 201 Charles St.

The measure was approved in a 5-0 vote, with council members Larry Moss and Jay Linton absent, in the amount of $63,800, with the work to be performed by Pitch Companies of Grand Rapids.

According to City Manager George Bosanic, demolition of the property — the 129-year-old former factory building that was destroyed in a fire in December — is already underway by a private company hired by the property owner, Stagood Co. of Grand Rapids; however, he advised the Council to proceed with the recommendation from the city building inspector and hearing officer, per the city’s dangerous building ordinance.

Bosanic said while demolition is currently in process, it was initially started without the proper permits in place, and the action by the Council will ensure demolition will be carried out if for whatever reason it the current efforts were to come to a halt.

The property owner was not in attendance during a show-cause hearing opened during the council meeting, thus no appeal was heard by the Council.

Stagood Co. has 21 days to appeal the decision in circuit court if they so choose.
