Police in Wadena County says a pallet fire started by two boys eventually became a large grass fire that produced a smoke plume seen from miles around.
The incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, when police were sent to a field in Lyons Township on report of a grass fire.
They could see heavy smoke to the north prior to their arrival, and when they got there they found several people trying to put the grass fire out, with windy conditions exacerbating its spread.
“The Deputy spoke with the property owner … who stated she was at the cabin when two juvenile males came running up to her and indicated they had poured some gas on a pallet to burn it then lit it on fire,” the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office said.
“They stated the fire quickly burned out of control due to the windy conditions.”
The fire was eventually extinguished with no damage to property.
