The National Beef Association (NBA) has dismissed ‘lip-service’ from food wholesaler Booker on its support for the UK industry after finding product repeatedly ’over-labelled’ with a later best before date.

Booker dismissed previous issues as a case of human error and ‘not in line with our required procedure’.
But NBA chief executive Neil Shand said there had been more issues, including a Booker label which showed a later best before date than the original Uruguayan label.
“Much of this beef will end up in the service sector – pubs, restaurants, hospitals, schools – and will be fed to unsuspecting consumers with no idea where the beef has come from, when it was slaughtered or that it has been sat in a freezer for 23 months,” Mr Shand said.
Mr Shand added transparency, accuracy and honesty in labelling is imperative and it was the responsibility of all retailers to ensure that the customer is allowed an informed choice.
