Free WiFi zones being established in areas affected by flood

Eight stations offering free wireless internet have been established in areas hardest hit by flash flooding two weeks ago.

The WiFi zones are furnished by Accelecom, a Kentucky-based high-speed fiber optics provider and the exclusive wholesaler of the KentuckyWired Project, and Rajant Corporation, the pioneer of Kinetic Mesh wireless networks with operations in Morehead.

All eight of these locations were chosen for these Wi-Fi zones due to the local Eastern Kentucky Health Departments’ established connections onto Accelecom’s fiber network.

The zones made possible thanks to Accelecom’s partnership with The Center for Rural Development. Because the Center had previously helped local health departments get the funding needed to build onto Accelecom’s fiber network, this network was in place and could be built upon for WiFi during this emergency.

Each zone covers an arc of approximately 650 feet from the installation point. Accelecom, Rajant, and The Center want to remind the community that these sites are available for everyone.

“The Center has been laser focused on getting broadband in every corner of our region and this is an extension of that,” Center President and CEO Lonnie Lawson said. “When our communities are hurting is the time for us to come together and bring resources to bear that can make a difference. We thank Accelecom and Rajant for this great collaboration.”

These zones can be found at the following locations:
