Free job training for Great Lakes tourism, travel, shipping

Detroiters seeking to land a job at sea can get free training through a maritime jobs fair later this month.

The maritime jobs fair, hosted by the Detroit Port Authority, Women from Teach/Empower/Achieve and the Mariners Inn shelter, is slated to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 30 on Detroit’s riverfront..

“Most people know Detroit as the Motor City — the car capital of the World. What they don’t know is that Detroit moved 8 million tons of cargo in 2020 with most of that going from ship to shore,” Mark Schrupp, director of the Port Authority, said in a news release announcing the fair. “Detroit has the largest seaport in the state and today we are working with the amazing people at Mariners Inn and Teach Empower Achieve to help people not just get a job but build an incredible life that pays well and could include travel overseas working in the international shipping industry.”

The job fair will provide avenues to get into the Great Lakes tourism, travel and international shipping industries.

The women from TEA and men from the Mariners Inn shelter will get an opportunity to find work, but everyone interested is invited, the release said.

David Sampson, executive director for Mariners Inn, lauded the effort.

“The men here have turned their lives around and go on to accomplish great things,” said Sampson. “They live free from addiction, come from varied backgrounds and are excited about life. Moreover, they are qualified to serve and embark on a new journey that can take them around the world. We are happy to be a part of this effort.”

So far, six companies have registered, with more expected, the release said. Pay range varies, and only some high school is required.
