Foreign exchange student in Iowa leads effort to help Ukrainians

Dallas Center-Grimes foreign exchange student leads effort to help Ukrainians

Bianna Sharsheeva is a foreign exchange student at Dallas Center-Grimes from Kyrgyzstan (just east of Ukraine). She is one of many who asked Governor Reynolds to step in to help Ukraine.On Wednesday, 30,000 meals were shipped out with hundreds of thousands more to be packaged.”You can feed thousands and thousands of children who right now are in a desperate situation,” Bianna Sharsheeva said. As a regular volunteer at Meals From the Heartland, Governor Kim Reynold’s plan to partner with the non-profit was a perfect way for Sharsheeva to step in. “She said they’re going to let me take initiative and lead the project and they’re going to support me as much as they can,” Sharsheeva said.Sharsheeva is now raising money to cover the shipping cost for more pallets of food to be shipped to Ukraine. So far, about $1,200 of their $5,000 goal has been raised. “It makes me happy that even teenagers and high schoolers think about this,” she said. On Wednesday, 30,000 meals left the West Des Moines Facility. They are already en route to Ukraine as the first shipment of Gov. Kim Reynolds’ promise. After a public packaging event with Meals From the Heartland later this month, they hope to be able to provide 285,000 meals to those in need in the war-torn country.Meals from the Heartland warehouse manager, Georgie Filber said, “Iowans in general love to give back and love to be able to give to their community both here and all over the world.”The public packaging event here at Meals From the Heartland will be announced next week by the governor’s office.
