First Day Hike Planned for Burlingame State Park | Rhode Island News

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Outdoor enthusiasts in Rhode Island can welcome in the new year with a First Day Hike at Burlingame State Park and Campground.

The hike at the park in Charlestown starts at 1 p.m. Saturday and runs until 3 p.m., the state Department of Environmental Management said.

First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors on the first day of every new year. They started in Massachusetts in 1992 and have since spread nationwide.

Nearly 85,000 people participated in 2021, collectively hiking more than 176,000 miles throughout the country.

“We invite Rhode Islanders to get out of the house, breathe in the fresh air, and get their hearts pumping after all the holiday celebrations,” acting Department of Environmental Management Director Terry Gray said in a statement.

Hikers will get commemorative pins and are reminded to take precautions against the spread of the coronavirus by sticking to state COVID-19 guidelines.
