Ludhiana: A day after a major fire broke out at SK Bikes factory in Phase 7 of Focal Point, the flames were doused on Friday at 8am, after almost 18 hours of battle by the fire-fighters. The firemen remained at the spot until 11.30am to ensure that flames do not erupt again, after carrying out thorough checks inside the unit. They also saved the factory’s adjoining blocks and a huge stock of thinners from coming in contact with the fire. As many as 250 rounds were made by fire tenders not only from Ludhiana, but also from other cities.
The fire had taken place at 1.15pm in the bike factory on Thursday, and firemen continued dousing the flames for the entire night. It was due to the huge stock of tyres, boxes, and packing material kept inside the factory that the fire had become uncontrollable. A total of 28 fire tenders were stationed at the spot, out of which 15 fire tenders were from Ludhiana, while the rest were called from Jalandhar, Phagwara, Jagraon, Samrala, Khanna, Mohali, Sahnewal airport, Halwara airport, Vardhman, and Oster group.
One of the firemen claimed that when they came out after completing the process in the morning, they were all covered in black smoke, and it was difficult to identify them. He said the smoke was dangerous, and it was difficult to stand there even for five minutes, but they entered the unit and controlled the situation. He claimed that after such a big fire incident, there should be a health check-up of all fire-fighters.
Fire station officer SN Sharma said, “The major problem was of huge stock, and that too rubber material which is highly flammable, but somehow we controlled the fire in the morning.” He said the factory owners did not have an NOC from the fire brigade, and no fire safety arrangements were done, adding that the factory was spread in a large area, and at least hydrants should have been installed by the owners, but they had to depend on nearby units to get water to douse the flames.
Meanwhile, in the morning at 7.45am, another fire incident took place in the machine of a factory at Daba Road. A fire tender was sent from Focal Point to the Radha Krishna factory on Daba Road, and the fire came under control in almost one hour, as it was not a major fire.
