Firefighters battle New Year’s blaze at abandoned factory

Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze at a long-abandoned Ohio factory on Wednesday, with smoke visible for miles.

No injuries were reported as the fire burned at the former paper plant in Middletown in southwestern Ohio.

Fire was first reported early Wednesday morning. Authorities thought the blaze was under control but went back to work after flames and heavy smoke were spotted in the early afternoon.

Middletown Fire Chief Paul Lolli told the Hamilton-Middletown Journal that homeless people frequent the building, the former Middletown Paperboard facility, but no cause was yet known. He said the goal for now was keeping the fire from spreading.

It’s the second major fire to hit the long-abandoned building following a 2018 blaze.
